Conference sub-themes

Interested researchers, academics, practitioners and industry partners are invited to submit papers, abstracts and posters for the Conference. Papers that involve joint authorship with students, industry and community partners are encouraged. Early career researchers and research students are also encouraged to contribute papers.

You may submit more than one full refereed paper or abstract, though you may only be the lead on ONE paper or abstract for full refereed papers, abstracts for showcase presentations and roundtable discussions.

All papers accepted in Category 1 Full Refereed Papers, will be published in the Conference Proceedings that will be made available to all conference participants, and online through the ACEN website. Papers in this category meet the criteria for E1 category publication in ERA.

The Conference theme is ‘WIL Creating Connections Building Futures’, which seeks to explore the following sub-themes:

1. Managing and Building Relationships

Successful WIL programs rely on the strength of relationships, between industry partners, students, universities and communities. How institutions manage and build these relationships and their impact on program development is the focus of this sub-theme including, but not limited to: the resources required to establish these connections; good practice in building WIL programs; in what ways, can we support industry; and innovative ways to connect with partners.

2. Embedding Employability

WIL provides an integral role in facilitating students’ transition from learner towards early career professional and this sub-theme calls for papers exploring this journey including, but not limited to: the relationship between WIL and employability outcomes; WIL and professional identity development; how feedback and debriefing impact on a student’s WIL experience; what future work skills students will require; and innovative approaches to embedding employability in the student education experiences.

3. Quality Dimension for WIL

The requirements of WIL across the disciplines vary. This sub theme encourages papers submitted for consideration in this section to include discussion around: defining quality WIL frameworks; role of assessment in WIL; evaluation of WIL; reviewing curriculum through the WIL lens; managing risk and intellectual property; student access and support, funding; and policies, processes and systems to support WIL.

4. Capability Building and Recognition

Institution and industry staff involvement in WIL management and development. This section calls for papers discussing: WIL as a discipline within Universities; the impact managing a WIL program has on career development; workload recognition and reward; WIL in position descriptions; developing leadership capacity through WIL within organisations, how to close the gap between academia and industry in embedding professional practice.

5. The Future of WIL

This section seeks papers exploring emerging themes in WIL and what the future of WIL past 2020 will look like.  This sub-theme focuses on, but is not limited to: How integration and co-design collaborations impact on WIL; what contributes to successful innovations in WIL; what are emerging research methodologies for WIL; what will WIL look like and, if not WIL, then what?

6. Creating Connections Within and Across Disciplines

  • WIL in STEM, Business, Arts, Health, Education, Law and Higher Degree Research Degrees
    Do you have current and innovative practices in WIL, relevant to your specific discipline? What are the emerging models of WIL internationally? How is technology enabling and supporting WIL practice? This sub-theme focuses on, but is not limited to: emerging entrepreneurial WIL; global WIL, online WIL; incubators; start-ups; and consulting models.
  • WIL, Interdisciplinary and Inter-professional Learning (IPL)
    IPL allows future practitioners to learn through collaborative practice with students across different disciplines and is recognised for improving service provision and outcomes for clients, breaking the barriers between professions by building partnerships. This area looks at the current landscape of IPL; emerging issues; future designs to enhance IPL; and current research in the international space.
